Tyler Perry Studios Opens

This month marked the opening of the new studios of Tyler Perry, the award-winning writer, director, and actor; creating a historic moment in United States events! Tyler Perry has succeeded in an enormous way, pressing forward into the media industry at a time when being a black man in that career path was (and often still is) virtually impossible. Now, Perry owns a 330-acre studio in Atlanta with sound stages named after famous black individuals, and he will continue producing movies using this studio, in addition to someday providing a haven for displaced minority groups. Not only did Tyler Perry succeed in creating this amazing studio, but he also built the studio on a former Confederate base! Perry said, “Think about the poetic justice in that. The Confederate Army is fighting to keep Negroes enslaved in America, fighting, strategy, planning on this very ground. And now this very ground is owned by me.” On the unveiling of his studio, Perry opened up about his shattered childhood and his struggles through abuse and poverty. To see Perry rise up from having nothing to being an amazingly successful, studio-owning mogul is awe-inspiring. Hope can’t help but give this news a standing ovation.

On World Mental Health Day this week, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and singer Ed Sheeran teamed up to make a hilarious video reminding viewers of the importance of mental health. Sheeran begins the video thinking that he’s going to Prince Harry’s house to plan a presentation on the well-being of Gingers, but he soon realizes that Harry is planning to discuss mental well-being for all! This delightful video will have you laughing out loud, but it ends on a serious note. As the video finishes, Harry encourages viewers to look out for themselves and others and to get help when needed. How encouraging that two important figureheads would speak out about mental health, a subject that often stays in the shadows!

Christina Aguilera Fights Back Against Domestic Violence

This week, Christina Aguilera received the Community Hero Award from Shade Tree, an emergency safe house dedicated to protecting women and children who have suffered abuse. In a touching Instagram post, Aguilera shared that she herself has been impacted by domestic violence, and stated that 1 in 4 women are also affected by domestic violence. However, she did not stop there; instead, she issued a call to arms against abuse, and cited several fundraisers to which people could donate to prevent abuse. She herself donates a portion of the proceeds from all her concerts to Shade Tree in order to help in the fight to eradicate domestic violence. How refreshing to see someone in the public eye shedding light on domestic violence and offering avenues of hope for people who currently are or have been struggling with it.
