We’re Obsessed with These Three Women!
Some powerful females are doing incredible things in the media, and Hope is here to keep you updated!
Biles Reaches New Heights
Gymnast Simone Biles made history this week with her triple-twist double somersault during her floor routine at the National Gymnastics Championships. But not only did she make history once, she also became the first person to complete a double-twist double somersault off the balance beam during a competition! With these stunning wins, Biles added amazing achievements to her already impressive collection of medals and also brought attention to the world of women’s sports and gymnastics. As journalist Dvora Meyers stated, “Biles, at least for a moment, was able to shift the paradigm of how we talk about women’s sports. She has transcended her chosen sport...while also making the conversation about her chosen sport. Specifically, she has sparked a conversation because of the way she is pushing gymnastics forward.” How cool to see women’s sports finally being covered the same way as men’s sports!
Gaga Funds Classrooms
This week, singer and actress Lady Gaga has vowed to fully fund classrooms that have been affected by the recent shootings in El Paso, TX; Dayton, OH; and Gilroy, CA. She will join with DonorsChoose.org to provide funding for 14 classrooms in Dayton, 125 classrooms in El Paso, and 23 classrooms in Gilroy. In a Facebook post, Gaga stated that she hopes these donations will enable teaching professionals to “have access to the support they need to inspire their students to work together and bring their dreams to life.” Also in her post, Gaga reminded readers to practice self-care and to reach out to loved ones who might be struggling, as “we need each other.” We at Hope applaud the good work she’s doing and share her concern for those suffering from the recent shootings.
Song’s Secret Obsession
In Netflix’s new thriller, Secret Obsession, Brenda Song stars as Jennifer, a woman who wakes up from a recent accident with no memory of her former life. As she leaves the hospital and returns home with her husband, she begins to realize that neither her house or lover feel familiar, and things start to turn sinister!
While this movie is at times a bit cheesy, with an underdeveloped plot line and unresolved loose ends, it is incredibly enjoyable and keeps you on the edge of your seat! Jennifer’s character is written realistically, and instead of spending the movie flailing around in indecision like most females in horror movies do, Jennifer makes logical decisions in the midst of her fears and displays her strength through ingenuity. Furthermore, Brenda Song is stunning as Jennifer, and her portrayal of emotion, her kickbutt stunts, and her endearing charm cause you to root for her character throughout the whole movie!
Spoiler: the movie has a fantastic and satisfying ending! Go watch Brenda Song shine as Jennifer today!
