Sweaters, plaids, midi skirts, booties and more!
Pumpkin-scented candles flicker softly in my room. The contents of my closet are strewn haphazardly across the bed. Rompers, sundresses, brightly colored blouses, cotton shorts and tank tops are piled high. It’s officially fall—a time to completely re-invent your look!
Fall fashion season is my favorite time of the year. It’s when sandals are replaced with boots, running shorts with leggings, T-shirts with sweaters. I love packing up my summer clothes and replacing them with the warm hues and soft textures of fall styles. For fashionistas, fall is a magical time when our outfits match the world around us: burnt orange, honey yellow, deep red, vibrant green. It’s time to dress for cozy evenings at home and cool days outside.
Rock That Plaid
Plaid shirts are more versatile than pumpkin spice—seriously, they look good with everything! Wear a casual plaid button down shirt over leggings for a day running errands, or wear it tucked in with slacks for work. On unusually hot days, or if you visit Texas any time this fall, wear a white tank top with a plaid shirt tied around your waist.
Some of my favorites include this Rag & Bone red, ivory, and grey plaid top ($325 from Neiman Marcus). Instead of the classic button-down look, this blouse features a wrap style front with a single button closure in the front and a high-low hemline that is long and flowy in the back. Taking pumpkin patch pictures? I like this orange-and-cream cotton option ($19.99 from Target). Just roll up the sleeves, tie your hair in a messy bun, and you’re ready to go!
Play with Colors and Textures
Fall fashion doesn’t have to be boring! You don’t have to wear burnt orange if you hate it, or to stay away from pink if you love it. The key is to play with your colors and textures, mixing it up until it fits your unique look.
Start with this cozy marigold yellow turtleneck, featuring a chunky cable-knit and twisted braid pattern ($85 from Nordstrom). It’s a gorgeous shade of gold that will instantly make your face glow on a dreary day. Wear it over this knee-length black wrap skirt, made with a stretchy polyester ($27.99 from Target). The contrast of comfortable, flowy skirt with the fitted chunky sweater makes for a chic, casual look.
Another option is this snuggly, oversized Free People sweater ($108 from Nordstrom). You will love wrapping up in it to wear to chilly football games or bonfires. While this will look good over colored leggings or dark jeans, you can also mix it up by wearing it over this buttery soft pleated skirt ($49.90 from Zara). The deep burgundy, midi-length skirt is accented with shiny silver buttons going down the front. Apply a dark red lipstick to match and you are ready for a night out!
Add Those Accessories, Girl!
No matter what anyone says, accessories are not optional. Especially when there are so many fierce ones available for fall! You’re safe with anything in warm hues, leopard print or a combination of both!
We love Eileen Fisher’s Bille Wrapped Nubuck Booties ($250 from Neiman Marcus), which are made with a sleek, black nubuck leather and a wraparound button closure. The tiny one-inch heel gives you a little boost that helps you to stand tall in your best fall outfit! When you are feeling a little extra, wrap this gorgeous leopard-print scarf around your neck ($34.95 from Lane Bryant). This lightweight fabric doesn’t make you too warm—perfect for rocking this look around the office. Finish the ensemble by stuffing your wallet, keys, and lip gloss into this gorgeous Kate Spade mini satchel ($298). This delicate mini purse is made with luxe calf hair in a wild pink leopard print. It’s impossible not to be in a good mood with this wrapped over your shoulders.
