Nicole Roberts Jones is a leader who works with women to help them impact others in big ways. She is also a member of The BOSS Network. I am a coach, speaker and author who works with women who want to have an impact on this world and want to make great incomes while they do it.
What accomplishments have you made during your time in this field? I would actually say that my biggest accomplishment—more than the two books I have written, the countless women I have coached, or any professional accomplishment—is really in my journey back to me. This journey started in 1993 when I had the job in Hollywood that many people dream of. However, what I realized is that living that dream was becoming my nightmare because what I really wanted was somehow to make a difference in the world. Well, in the midst of feeling dazed and confused, one of my friends asked me to volunteer at a youth program at our church. That night, something in me came alive! I realized I was born to help people transform their lives. I knew in that moment this is exactly where I was meant to be and I really started listening to my heart.
What is one of the most important keys to your success? I realized I could learn everything there is to know about business. But if I didn't commit to constant growth, my success would be short-lived. So many get stuck on our resumes, not realizing that that was yesterday’s success. To continue to grow, I am always looking for what’s next and growing toward that subsequent level of success. Doing this means moving into areas I have never been. So, I also had to learn that if I want something I have never had, I would have to do it afraid and not allow fear to paralyze me. Growing and moving through fear at all times allows me to stay on my A-game.
What are some of the obstacles and challenges you have faced? What helped you to overcome them? In order to move forward in my life, I had to release my limiting belief of not feeling good enough. I had to let go of being so focused on what other people thought about me and what other people said about me.
For years, I was so focused on being liked and fitting in that I was playing small. I spent years being okay with everyone else’s definition of who I should be and what I should do. When I stopped to define me for myself, it was at a time that I had built an incredible career in the entertainment industry. At the same time, I was saying to myself, “I don’t think this is really who I am. I don’t think this is my passion.” I had this whisper inside of me, saying, “Nicole, there is something bigger waiting for you.” But, I had no idea what that was. I remember feeling like I was standing at a fork in the road—a fork that made me look at myself in the mirror and for the first time in my life, ask myself, “What do you want?” In that moment, I was willing to become unrecognizable for my future. I no longer cared what anyone else thought I should be or do, and I began to listen to my heart. It felt so good that I wanted everyone else to feel the same way. It was in this space that I realized my life’s calling was to pour into people who found themselves at that same crossroad I did.
How would you encourage other women who are seeking to take the next step in their career endeavors? The one thing you must know is your dream, your gift, your calling is what you were born to do—it is how you are meant to serve the world.
