“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” - Proverbs 4:25
I love new beginnings. New chapters, new projects, new visions. I love that each January, we are reminded to take an honest look at where we’ve been, where we want to go, and what it will take to get there.
Many of us do that by making New Year’s resolutions. Research suggests that about 50% of Americans end up making a New Year’s resolution each year. But, of those, not even 10% say they are successful in keeping those resolutions. In fact research suggestions that, 25% of people don’t even make it past week one of keeping their resolution.
Those aren’t very good odds. And while there are many reasons for failing to keep a resolution, one major factor is distraction. We get thrown off course by unexpected life circumstances and our goals are de-railed. We focus on our weaknesses or disappointment or challenges and we miss God’s power at work in the overwhelmingly large white space around us.
God wants you and I to live on mission. A mission larger than a New Year’s resolution, but one that requires the same amount of focus to achieve. As we start a New Year, let’s resolve to do one thing together - keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Let’s resolve to focus on the vastness of God’s mighty power and amazing work all around us on this planet. God wants us to be diligent in keeping our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus, to be laser focused, because He knows that where we focus is where we’ll go.
I doubt that any of us want to get to the end of our lives only to realize that we did many good things, but not the one thing God assigned specifically for us to do because we got distracted. Instead, we all want to cultivate a habit of focus so that we can keep the main thing in sight and take hold of the entire destiny God has for us.
We want the grit to complete our task, and the guts to say no when we need to. Extraordinary
accomplishments in the kingdom of God are rarely happenstance. They result from our daily choices and everyday actions. But we must decide, today, to be single-minded and focused on Jesus and the mission He’s given us to complete.
I cringe to think of the great works for God that were never finished because people got distracted from their purpose. Determine in your heart today that as we enter a New Year, you will stay laser focused on Jesus and His awesome power at work all around you.
When we fix our eyes on Jesus - the One who calms the storms and heals the blind, we won’t be distracted by chaos or hurt or disappointment that may come our way. Instead, we will see Him at work in our lives and we will develop a faith that grows bigger than any storm we encounter or any fear that may threaten to shake our world. No matter what opposition or challenges we may encounter in the year ahead, if we keep our eyes gaze heavenward, our faith will rise up and make us unshakeable.
