Like many, you resolved to live a healthier lifestyle in the beginning of the year. That is because we (myself included) allow ourselves to partake in some very unhealthy habits at times and want to make a fresh start by vowing to do and be better. For some time now, I have been coaching and educating others on healthy lifestyle living and as we all know, anything we put into, on, or around our body can impact our health. Unhealthy habits can include inadequate sleep, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, smoking, abusing alcohol, working too much, or using products made with harsh chemicals in our everyday living.

Practicing these habits can contribute to anxiety, stress, obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, elevated blood pressure, and even cancer. There are many ways to help reduce the risk of these and many other conditions, but to achieve optimal health, here are 3 areas to focus on:

Exercise, nutrition, and sleep

Exercise is key to improving several health challenges and has many benefits including a healthy heart, improved mental health, stress reliever, and weight loss. However, without the perfect balance of nutrition, weight loss can be challenging. Taking in fewer calories than you burn is the key to successful weight loss. Adequate sleep also plays an important role in your physical health and can benefit your heart, weight, and mind.

Free radical and inflammation reduction

Free radicals are toxic byproducts of oxygen metabolism that can cause significant damage to living cells and tissues in a process called “oxidative stress.” According to Live Science, the body is under constant attack from oxidative stress. Free radicals, along with inflammation, are considered the root causes of a number of degenerative health conditions.

The key is to reduce free radicals and inflammation in our bodies. Increasing your antioxidant intake via fresh fruits and vegetables can help keep these free radicals under control. However, the Freiburg Study shows that nutritional supplements can also have a direct impact not only in reducing free radical activity and inflammation in healthy individuals, but to several key health markers as well (blood pressure, triglycerides, blood glucose spike, HDL and LDL cholesterol, and heart rate during physical activity).

Toxin load reduction

There are several culprits that contribute to toxicity in our body including the water we drink, the food we eat, personal care products, household cleaning products, and even stress. According to Robin Berzin, M.D., stress is the most dangerous toxin in our lives. So, what are some ways to help reduce your toxin load? First and foremost, be very mindful of your purchases for everyday living, read labels, and know the ingredients used in the products. Other ways include:

  1. Upgrade your water by using a water filter
  2. Incorporate detox foods into your diet, such as apples, asparagus, broccoli, beets, collard greens, avocado, and cauliflower.
  3. Swap out your personal care products for those made with naturally-derived ingredients
  4. Clean green as household cleaners are loaded with harmful chemicals and stay on surfaces and in the air once used
  5. Identify your stressors and learn how to respond to them quickly in order to better manage them

Exposure to toxins is inevitable as they are all around us. But, we can take precautions to help take better care of our bodies and achieve optimal health. It will require changes to our daily habits and consumer goods we choose, but will be well worth it.
