Women Who Win

Strong women make an impact on the world around them. They are winners who have a strong spirit, determination, cause and wisdom. But they can’t do that without making smart decisions about their health care. And you, dear reader, are no different. You are a strong woman, and I want to encourage you to utilize sound judgment and make smart decisions regarding your health. Given what is happening with the instability of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) and the continuous language about repeal and replace, women must place themselves in a position to win.

But I know not all of you feel like you're on top. According to a study by the University of Michigan, 115,000 women lose their private health insurance every year in the wake of divorce. For example, suppose you are one of the ladies nationwide in the middle of a divorce. Not easy, is it? Regardless, your health should be one of your primary steps to stay ahead physically and mentally. In order to win you must know several things about the Affordable Care Act as it stands right now: (1) From the time of your divorce, you have 60 days to get new health insurance under a special enrollment period if you do not get to keep your current insurance. Be aware that you will pay more for a special enrollment period because it is outside of the regular time period. (2) Have you talked with your providers to see what health insurance plans they take? This will be important for you to know ahead of time in case you find yourself having to get new insurance for yourself.

If you are one of the 55 million women who would be affected by ACA repeal, you should be deciding now how you are going to take care of your health. It is not wise to wait and see what your elected politicians are going to do. Having a Plan B, C, D and E should be your mindset whether it is health, education or even employment. Remember the old adage: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!” You have to be in control of your health care. How will you get your well checks? How will you get your prescriptions? Do you have relationships with the pharmaceutical company who makes your meds?

According to Julia Craven of Huffington Post, Black Women stand to face devastating losses if Obamacare is repealed. This is based on their being more susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and more. Additionally, a lot of single working mothers are the sole support for their families even when it comes to health care. Look around your immediate circle, how many single adult working mothers also take care of or even regularly has to check in on an elderly mom who is on a limited income? An ACA repeal will even affect elderly black women. The key to winning is to look at what your current method is for taking care of your health, your family’s health and what is happening with that elderly parent or parents. It is important to look at medications, number of doctors visit per year and even income. Then develop a game plan for how you can take care of your health beginning in April.

What will be your story when it comes to winning in YOUR health? There will be continuous talk about repeal and replace, pre-existing conditions, Medicaid, health savings accounts and even giving the power back to the states to make decisions when it comes to health insurance. No matter what, you have to put yourself in a position to win versus waiting for things to happen and feeling as if you have to go with the flow even when it won’t work for you.

Let us know how you are going to win in your health this month and beyond!
