Five Steps to a Fresh Start

I love the New Year! It’s not because of the date on the calendar, but because this time of year inspires people to create new beginnings. It’s exciting to think about new possibilities! Hope is renewed, dreams are revisited, and people start to move forward. Unfortunately, once the newness of a new year wears off, many people return to the old; but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are five steps to help you create a fresh start! 1) Get Clear – It’s not enough to know that we want something better—we must be clear about the specifics. How will we know when better shows up if we don’t have a vision of what better is? If you say you want to make more money, what does that look like? A $1 raise or a $10,000 pay increase? We must be clear in order to know which direction we need to head.

2) Decide – Once you know what you want, make a decision to go get it. A true decision is a separator because it determines what you are saying “yes” to, but also what you are saying “no” to. If your goal is to get out of debt, you have to say “no” to the sales at the mall in order to say “yes” to debt freedom. All real decisions will require you to take new action.

3) Plan “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.” -Winston Churchill Now that you have decided what you want to accomplish, you need a plan to make it happen. If your goal is to get out of debt, which debts will you attack first? How much will you apply to them? If your goal is to make more money, what certifications do you need to obtain to justify your increase? Have you clearly identified the value you bring to your organization? Do you need to search for a new job, talk to your current manager or start your own business? Each course of action requires a different plan.

4)Be committed to the outcome, but flexible in your approach – There are many paths to your destination, so don’t get discouraged if the first one doesn’t work. Don’t give up. If talking to your manager doesn’t work, remember that you still have options. Look for other positions within the company or outside of the company. Sometimes we miss the option for a fresh start because we aren’t willing to consider that it will require moving to new spaces.

5)Believe - “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believe.” Mark 9:23 (NKJV) You must believe that new and fresh are possible for you. You must believe that God has engineered you with all you need to become all you were created to be. You are bigger than your challenges! You have what it takes to create a fresh start!

Move forward in a new, fresh way! Blessings!
