8 smart things to do before 8 a.m. everyday

You’ve heard the saying, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” It’s true that early risers are the most efficient humans. So stop hitting the snooze button and get your body in motion. Here are eight great things to get done before 8 a.m. that will change your life!

1) Make your bed

Do what your mama told you and make your bed! Do it first thing upon rising. It sets the tone for your day and ensures you won’t sneak back in to cozy down for a second snooze. You have things to do; time to get moving!

2) Hydrate

You may love your coffee, but starting with a big glass of water first will activate your system. Downing 16 ounces of cold water will help you flush out toxins and jumpstart your metabolism. Add a squeeze of lemon for the added benefits of vitamins and minerals. It’s a no-brainer!

3) Journal

Start your day with gratitude; write it out. Then set your intentions for the day. Next, let your pen fly with your stream of consciousness: any issues that are currently bothering you, any remarkable dreams you may have had, etc. Just let if fly and don’t judge what you are writing. You never know what may be revealed to you through the open page. The power of the pen is mighty!

4) Meditate/Pray

Now that you have set your intentions for the day, take five to 15 minutes to meditate. No need to attempt to empty your head of thought; that’s impossible. Just sit quietly and be still. Let your thoughts flow as they do. There’s no wrong way to meditate. Taking a bit of quiet time for you is very powerful.

5) Organize your day

Allow yourself the time to look at your calendar and fully organize your day. Plan out your travel routes and make your list of things that need to get done. Having a clearly laid out plan makes it easier to avoid distractions during the day. You are on a mission, girl!

6) Break a Sweat

Exercising in the morning is instrumental in really making it a lifelong habit. Do it if for no other reason than to get it out of the way. You won’t have the excuse of being tired after work or not wanting to sweat on your lunch break. Getting your blood pumping in a serious way upon waking is incredibly energizing. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you!

7) Protein

Eat at least 12 to 15 grams of protein, and you will get your metabolic system up and running strong. Balance your breakfast with some healthy carbohydrates and a little fat to set the tone nutritionally for the rest of your day. Eating a strong portion of protein in the morning will help curb the cravings for the white carbs that tempt us like bagels, doughnuts and pancakes.

8) Do at least one thing towards your most important long-term goal

Whatever your most important personal goal is – whether it’s running a marathon, starting your own business or just eating healthier – make sure you do at least one small thing towards that goal everyday. A little bit of work each day adds up to accomplishing your goals. Dreams do come true!
