Last-Minute Independence Day Dessert Ideas!
You can create patriotic desserts that will wow your family and friends without spending a lot of time or money. A few simple tricks can take ordinary desserts and make them extraordinarily spectacular! Here’s a list of ideas anyone can make. Gather the necessary items for the treat of your choice, and invite the kids to help. Putting something so festive together will really boost their confidence!
Red, white and blue cake or cupcakes – Simply divide your favorite white cake batter into three bowls. Color one of the bowls of batter blue and one red. Leave one white. Bake in three 8-inch round cake pans, or spoon three layers of the batter into patriotic-themed cupcake liners in a muffin tin. Bake for 20 minutes or until done (when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean). Frost with whipped cream or your favorite white frosting. Decorate with fresh berries or sprinkles, and insert sparklers to create your own fireworks!
Ice cream sandwiches – Make simple ice cream sandwiches by sandwiching ice cream between two chocolate wafer cookies (I use Nabisco Famous Wafers) or your favorite cookie. (Try peanut butter cookies with strawberry ice cream, chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream, or oatmeal cookies with caramel ice cream.) Fill the sandwiches with an inch of ice cream so that your sandwiches are nice and thick. Gently squeeze the cookies so the ice cream is coming out of the sides. Cover a shallow dish with a layer of red, white and blue sprinkles. Then, roll the outside of the sandwiches in the sprinkles. The sprinkles will stick to the ice cream and create a pretty, festive edge. Store in freezer until ready to serve.
Cold treats – Serve a trio of your favorite red, white and blue ice cream, frozen yogurt or sorbet flavors. You can stack them in ice cream cones or serve in dishes.
Vanilla ice cream – Serve vanilla ice cream topped with fresh berries.
Festive berry trifle – Make a simple berry trifle by layering torn pieces of angel food cake with whipped cream and berries. Make three layers in a glass trifle dish or bowl so that everyone can see the red, white and blue colors. Arrange sparklers on top for a show-stopping presentation!
American flag cake – Make a sheet cake, frost with whipped cream, and arrange berries on top to create the American flag.
Star-shaped treats – Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to turn your favorite dessert into a star-spangled celebration:
• Cut baked brownies into stars. Frost and sprinkle with red, white and blue sprinkles. • Cut rolled-out cookie dough into stars, and sprinkle with red, white and blue sprinkles before baking. • Cut puff pastry into stars, and bake. Serve with fresh berries and whipped cream. • Cut shortcake biscuits into stars for a festive strawberry shortcake. • Make your favorite baked pie, but use a star cutter to cut several stars for the top crust. Just arrange them on top of the filling before baking. For extra sparkle, brush stars with milk, then sprinkle with white sanding sugar.
Enjoy your holiday weekend by bringing festive food and fun into your kitchen. Any of these ideas will make you a Fourth of July superstar!
