People often get so busy with life that when Thanksgiving comes around, their first thoughts are to plan the big Thanksgiving dinner. If you take a bit of time to think about the true meaning of the holiday, though, you can really make it more meaningful when you bring family and friends together. When many people think of Thanksgiving, they often reflect on all the things they need to be thankful for. Life may not be perfect, but everyone has at least something to be thankful for—even if it’s something as little as having heat and food in your home. Thanksgiving is also an opportunity to be grateful for your loved ones. When you look at the diseases and disasters all around the world, to be well and healthy is indeed a blessing.

Though it’s a welcomed tradition to have the family over for Thanksgiving, individuals often don’t get much time to rest because they are so caught up in the preparation for the day. Here are a few ways you can put a different twist on Thanksgiving, while still expressing a spirit of gratitude.

Take time to spend with your spouse. You can go shopping, bowling or on a romantic city trip away from home. Do something to show thanks to your spouse for the support, providing for the family, and being a hero when a spider is hiding in the corner of the room. Whatever you need to be thankful for, Thanksgiving is the best occasion to express it. In marriages, spouses often forget to say thank you to each other. Remember that marriage is a choice and not a right.

Take time to spend with your girlfriends. There is always a friend who sticks closer than your own sisters—someone who is always willing to give honest advice, tell the truth even when it hurts, and provides a shoulder to cry on when you feel alone in your relationship. Why not use this opportunity to take that special woman to a spa just to show thankfulness for her friendship?

Spend time in your community. There are so many great needs within the world. Even in your own communities, there are people and families who need help. You may not be able to give financially, but you can provide your time and give food to those who are in need. Find out how you can help out with a local soup kitchen. Spending time with people less fortunate than you can helps put life in a different perspective.

Take time to spend with the Maker. People often forget that every breath you take is by the grace of God and should never be taken for granted. If it were not for His daily provision and divine protection over your family, where would you be? Going on a spiritual retreat away from all the hustle and bustle of life can be extremely rejuvenating. You may often pray for God to bless you in your busy schedule. Taking a day to spend alone time with God to thank Him can bring more blessings than you could ever imagine.

Whatever you choose to do on Thanksgiving, have a blessed day, and don’t forget to be thankful.
