A Toolkit for Success at the Beginning and Middle of your Career

By Nichelle Rae

The new graduate toolkit just got a great addition — and it’s a book! Don’t Hook up with the Dude in the Next Cube: 200+ Career Secrets for 20-Somethings by Nancy A. Shenker and Lindsay E. Brown may sound a bit brash – but just in case you’re tempted to avoid this book, I have one word of advice: DON’T. If you’re in the midst of a job search — or even a career change — this is one book you’ll definitely want to add to your collection.

The content in Shenker and Brown’s book is excellent. I found myself circling, underlining, and quoting from it to colleagues often. It truly speaks to the reality of women’s work environments – and the authors share vital information in navigating our place as women in the workplace.

In today’s work world there is no room for error. Missteps in the office or workplace can end a job — and even damage your career for years down the road. The authors speak to these points, offering invaluable tips for those starting out. The book is a good refresher for those of us who have been out here for a while too.

Shenker and Brown cue you into which behaviors to encourage – and what missteps to avoid — including:

  • Maintaining an attitude of interest and investment in meetings
  • Saying “No” to cell phone temptations
  • Avoiding “Mean Girl” behavior
  • Knowing how to handle the various “animal species” in the office with ease (like “Rumor Ruth” and “Party Pammy”)
  • Choosing your words wisely
  • Understanding that workplace policies are real, and why you need to read them to the last fine printed line

Short paragraphs, line drawings and humorous asides make this book easy to read. It also includes a couple of short worksheets and checklists for your own notes.
