‘Tis the Season To Be…?

This December, find a reason to find hope

I don’t know about you, but I have to say the month of December is usually a time to be joyous, cheerful, loving, partying, and laughing, right? Well, many people I know dread the month of December for multiple reasons: the stress of shopping; not having enough money to buy gifts; some people actually feel lonelier around this time more than ever; and December also represents the end of another year—which can be exciting for some and dreadful for others.

I recall that as a child my home felt like Rockefeller Center with all of the decorations and lights throughout my apartment. My parents made it their business to make sure we were never without a tree or gifts. One year, my dad put an aspirin in the water of the tree after someone told him it would make the tree last. Well, unbeknownst to us, the next day our tree died, and we ended up having to purchase another tree almost my height—and I am pretty short! Mind you, my parents were not rich at all as far as finances, but as I have gotten older and matured I realized we were very rich. We had our health, a warm home, running water, food in the refrigerator, gifts under the tree, and clean clothes. I mean, what else could a girl ask for?

My husband of almost 14 years has taught me so many lessons, one of them being about perspective. You know the saying about the cup being half full or half empty? How do you see your cup? Now I do understand everyone’s situation is different, but what if you made a choice this month to look at the cup as being half full? I know I may be asking you for a lot, but I am only asking because I truly believe in you. I believe that no matter what this year has been like for you, so much more is possible. I believe when we step out of the boxes we are in and dare to make changes, amazing things happen. I believe ‘tis the season to live boldly. I believe in you. God believes in you.

I pray that December is a time of reflection for your life and that you look forward to a new year and a new you full of HOPE.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year,

April

April knew she wanted to try standup comedy after seeing John Leguizamo in his first one-man show "Mambo Mouth." She would get her first shot at comedy performing for an audience at the New York Comedy Club. The first time she heard the crowd laugh, April knew she had a natural ability to speak in front of crowds—especially the ones who didn't laugh. Years later, the stand-up comedy was her training for becoming a motivational speaker but, more importantly, a woman who would use her voice to empower a generation.
