Self Care, Down There: The Do’s and Don'ts of Feminine Hygiene
The best care for down there
When you hear the words “self-care” you think of makeovers and spa days - but what about feminine hygiene? Taking care of your vaginal health is an important part of your self-care routine. Myths and products alike are plentiful, so here are a few tips to get you headed in the right direction.
Warm water does the trick.
Yes, you read that right. The vagina is naturally acidic and self cleaning. When you use products such as spray, powder or soap down there, it actually can throw off the natural pH balance of the vagina creating an area for harmful bacteria to thrive.
Skip the lace and opt for cotton.
While pretty velvet, lace, and satin panties may be tempting, cotton underwear are the best for feminine hygiene. Cotton is soft and breathable, allowing air to circulate. Materials such as satin hold in moisture and can lead to infection.
Swap out your clothes after a sweat session.
Wearing sweaty clothes provides bacteria and yeast the perfect environment in which to multiply. It’s important to change out of sweaty underwear to keep your intimate area cool and dry.
It’s good to go commando at night to allow air to circulate. When you wear tight clothes or underwear, it can trap moisture causing irritation and odor. Taking time to go without underwear allows your vulva to be free from irritants such as dyes or chemicals found in certain fabrics. Going pantie-free can also alleviate chafing.
You may not have time to shower after sex, but it’s important to pee. Urinating clears bacteria from the urinary tract, decreasing the likelihood of developing an infection.
The time you spend caring for this most intimate part of your body is always time well spent - so make sure you are giving yourself the best care, down there.
