Achieve that Look: Hope's Winter Cover Girl 2022

The secret is out: Makeda Smith is Hope’s winter 2022 cover girl! If you’re obsessed with her look like we are, then you’re going to love meeting the woman who created it — makeup artist, Brittany Corrine.

We recently chatted with her about her career, makeup tips and all things beauty. Plus, she even revealed what products she used on Makeda’s cover look, so you can recreate a version of it on yourself at home. See what she said below!

Hi, Brittany! Did you always dream of becoming a makeup artist?
“Being on set for a photo or video shoot was always the ‘dream job’ for me. As a young girl, I was always obsessed with red carpet looks. I’d watch award shows, read magazines and would always be drawn to people’s makeup. I would even clip pictures from magazines so I could attempt to recreate my favorite looks. However, it wasn’t until I went to Esthetician school back in 2017 that I started to take makeup artistry seriously and make it my career.”

Well, all your hard work has definitely paid off! We especially love the look you did on Makeda for the magazine cover. What inspired it?
“Thank you so much! A lot of the wardrobe that was selected for the shoot were pieces that made a statement, and in my opinion, represented a woman of power, style and grace. I wanted her makeup to convey that same message, so her makeup is sultry, yet neutral and elegant.”

For readers who want to achieve a similar look to the one you did on Makeda, can you reveal what products you used? Let’s start with her skin.
“Sure! For skin prep, I moisturized her skin with the Vitamin Enriched Face Base by Bobbi Brown. I love this moisturizer because it’s an all-in-one product used for priming and hydrating the skin. For her foundation, I used the Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation by NARS in shade Macao and Marquises and I went with the Filter Effect Soft Radiance Concealer by Morphe in shade Rich 26 (cool). I like this concealer because it is water-resistant and hydrates the skin without making it look oily.”

What’s one of your favorite beauty tricks you’ve learned over the years when it comes to applying foundation?
“A small makeup hack I like to do is to dampen my makeup sponge and then squeeze out the excess water. Using the sponge while damp allows the makeup to move around and blend easier. If you do not want to use water, you can use a hydrating setting spray and give the sponge a couple light sprits to help blend out the foundation and/or concealer.”

Love that! Makeda’s contouring is flawless. How did you apply it so it wouldn’t appear overly harsh?
“It’s all about blending. For example: To reduce the appearance of your forehead, apply the contour stick underneath your hairline and blend that into the foundation, so there are no harsh lines! Everything must be blended seamlessly. Once you get around to your ears on both sides, make a fish face and apply the contour from the top of the ear into the indentation on the sides of your cheeks and blend out. For Makeda’s look, I went with the Shade Contour Stick by Juvia’s Place in shade Benin. Then, I set her face with Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder and Bake & Set Setting Powder by Morphe in shade Translucent Rich."

When it came to blush, highlighter, etc., what were your go-tos for Makeda’s look?
“I used the Saharan Blush Palette Volume II, The Royalty II Loose Highlighter and Bronzed Duo Bronzer in shade Tan. I applied the blush on the balls of her cheeks and blended it into the contour and bronzer. Then I applied the highlight above where I applied the contour.”

Makeda’s eyes are mesmerizing on the cover! What did you use to make them stand out?
“I used a wispy eyelash that has volume and helped make her eyes pop. I feel that eyelashes help take your look to another level. For her eyeshadow, I used the 35M Boss Mood Palette by Morphe, which was very fitting for the occasion. Then before applying any eyeshadow, I first used a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend concealer all over her eyelids and followed that with a small amount of translucent powder to set that makeup. Then I used a dense eyeshadow brush to apply the eyeshadow across the lid (underneath the crease) and then a clean fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend from the lid upward into the crease of the eyelid. After that, I used INGLOT gel eyeliner in shade black and finished it off with the Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara. For her brows, I used the Micro Brow Pencil by Morphe in shade ‘Chocolate Mousse’.”

Applying lashes can be tricky if you’re not used to it. What’s your top hack to make them appear natural?
“Using an eyelash applicator or a set of tweezers always make applying lashes very simple. Be sure that your natural lashes and the lash strip is blended together by using mascara and black liquid eyeliner, then use a liner to fill in if there are any visible gaps.”

What setting spray did you use at the shoot to finish off her look?
Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Makeup Sealer (setting spray). This is one of my favorite setting sprays because it keeps your makeup in place for hours!”
