Creating Your Life into Words
Have you often asked yourself, “What is my life story?” A personal narrative awaits you! Here are five tips on how to share your story artistically!
Poetry is like the structure of life
As with life, poetry doesn't follow a chronological order and your words don’t even need to rhyme. Like life itself, poetry is as scattered as your historical timeline. Unlike a narrative essay, you can begin a narrative poem from anywhere in your life and you can end your poem at any stanza. Life is forever changing. It's long, though the time you have seems to go by fast! You’ll often have to choose a block to pick up where you left off.
Establishing that key moment
In your poem, which mystery from your life will be revealed to us? Is it explaining what home means and looks like for you? What taste, sense, smell or object brings back memories of a time you’re nostalgic for? What helped form who you are? What are your strengths and your struggles?
Relieving
Now that you have that piece of a moment in your life you want to write about, what did you do with or in that moment? Did you celebrate, walk away or cherish it? Poetry allows the ability of picking up whatever highlight is important to you. It can be the last few moments or very beginning.
What Emotion did You Express?
"Poetry is an outlet that conveys each expression, each emotion.’’ Arranging your emotional response sets the tone for what you bring to the table and with whom you share a seat. You will continue this in your following few stanzas leading to an open realization about oneself in an emotion.
Watch It Happen, Let It Finish for Itself
Regardless of the puzzle piece you chose or the presentation you use, it will all come together line by line. Each word has a leads along a path, and as you take each step, it will connect to another and create the whole picture!
