Facing Criticism
I wish everything about the journey to Hope was good and pleasant; however, dealing with disgruntled customers and past readers are part of the process. I used to want to avoid that part of my job, you know, go under a rock and hide somewhere because of the struggle of facing rejection and criticism, but over the course of time, I have grown and learned to deal with it head on -big girl undies and all!
It used to hurt my little feelings whenever someone would unsubscribe from the magazine or share their discontentment with Hope. In my aim to please every reader, I would feel like such a failure whenever I learned that I’d fallen short. Instead of facing complaints and placing a magnifying glass on my imperfections as Hope’s leader, I wanted to sweep it under a rug as if they never existed.
But you can’t ignore an elephant in the room for too long, right? At some point you have to acknowledge its presence, examine how it got there, and figure out how to move it. In my case, I had to acknowledge the fact that maybe I hadn’t lived up to readers’ expectations, examine how I’d failed, and figure out how to fix it. That meant I had to swallow my pride and reach out to those who had, in their dissatisfaction, walked away from Hope.
I figured that, although I may not win all of them back, I’d at least gain some insight on how I could improve the magazine to recapture their loyalty and give Hope a facelift. Instead of hiding from it and allowing it to hurt me, I made the choice to face it and let it help me.
It’s not always an easy feat to stare criticism in the face, especially when it makes you feel like you’ve let others down. But if you take it with a grain of salt and see it as an opportunity to open your eyes to what you can do better, you will grow from it.
That’s exactly what I’ve had to do – push my feelings aside, even though some criticism hurts, and learn from the experience. I’ve forgiven myself for feeling as if I’d let others down, and now I’m focused and more zealous about Hope connecting to the heart of every reader.
Sometimes it good to pay attention to the not-so-nice things others have to say, not to allow it to discourage you, but to shed light on some things you may not have known. Take at it face value, do a little soul-searching, make improvements, and keep moving forward with your dream. I most certainly am.
Enjoying Hope,
Angie

Hi Angela. Not sure if you’ll actually read this or not, but I really related to this post. Just got off the phone at work with a horrible constituent when it landed in my inbox.
Your post really put things into perspective for me. I have a speech issue and instead of letting her hurtful comments get to me, I’m taking it as a learning opportunity and will keep moving forward with my career ambitions.
Thanks.
