When I woke up this morning to get ready for church, it was almost cold enough for a jacket. How cold is it where you are? Almost everywhere, there are signs that fall is here and it’s time to get our closets ready for colder weather. Is your closet ready?
This season is my favorite and I start longing for fall clothes while I am still sweltering in the heat of summer! If you’re ready to plan and create your fall wardrobe capsule, let’s pour a cup of hot apple cider and get started.
Capsule Wardrobe Closet Inventory…
First, identify what you already have. In order to stay in your closet, each piece should meet these criteria:
(1) It flatters your coloring, your personality and body type. For example, I am a dressing your truth type 3 and an autumn, so the rich russets, warm greens, red-oranges and rich browns are perfect for me!
If they aren’t for you, but you have them anyway to fit in with the season, I want to encourage you to let them go. Finding colors and styles that actually flatter you is a much better way to honor the season than wearing the typical colors.
It is just as important that what you choose flatters your body type. If it doesn’t, throw it out!
(2) You LOVE it. This one is sometimes hard for me! It can be SO tempting at times to go with good and not wait for best. But you deserve the best! Don’t you?
Once you have inventoried your closet, choose one or two colors to use to create your fall capsule wardrobe and make sure they mix and match. You also can choose a neutral that goes well with both colors.
My own fall capsule wardrobe has a lot of brown and red-oranges, with camel as the neutral I have chosen to go with both.
Starting Small with Your Fall Capsule…
If your budget is small, you don’t have to have a lot of pieces to put together a great fall wardrobe. Choose colors that you already have and identify what you have available in those colors to form the foundation of your capsule. Look for:
2 jackets/cardigans
2 shirts or sweaters
2 pairs of pants, jeans or skirts
Next, identify what’s missing from your capsule. Make a list of what you need and go shopping.
Wading through a pile of catalogs, a page of emails or a mall full of stores is so much easier when you are concentrating on only a few colors and you know exactly what you need. That doesn’t mean you won’t add on an extra or two, but you won’t feel compelled to look closely at everything you see.
Building Your Fall Wardrobe Capsule…
To review: first, make sure you have the basics. The good news is that you only need a few pieces to get started.
Then, take note of what you are seeing in the stores, catalogs and online so you can add some flair here and there. If you have a small orange-and-brown capsule already hanging in your closet, you could add some additional pieces in those colors, add a third color, like green or rust, or go looking for some fantastic accessories to match what you already have.
Don’t buy on impulse: make sure the fashion trends for fall will flatter you. For example, I am seeing a lot of long sweaters, over-the-knee boots and leggings. Though I find it tempting, that look would be tricky for someone with an apple shape like me.
Once you identify things that will flatter you, ask yourself if what you want to buy will play well with the other items in your capsule.
Create a plan both for early fall, which often is a time of transition where temps can fluctuate, and for later, when it will be much colder.
Create a Fall Accessory Capsule, too…
Once you have the clothes in your fall capsule, it’s time to find the accessories! A scarf that has each of the colors of your capsule, earrings and bracelets in each color, boots that will be perfect for the sweaters-and-leggings combinations you have planned, and more.
Some fashion experts suggest a wardrobe with more accessories than clothes! I have never been able to follow that advice but I have found that it is much easier to feel like I have an endless wardrobe if I have lots of different accessories to mix and match with the clothes I have.
Putting It All Together…
So once you have identified what you already have, and what you need, you’ll be in a great position to begin to build a fabulous and flattering fall wardrobe capsule with colors that mix and match and accessories that add flair to each outfit you create.
So which colors have you chosen? Let us know in the comments section!
