Campfire Favorites: Traditional treats with a healthy spin

As the first days of fall begin to approach, we feel the pressure to make the most of these last days of summer. Somewhere between Memorial Day and the start of August summertime has seemed to slip through our fingers. But before you even think about pulling out fall jackets and buying school supplies, try these traditional summer campfire favorites before the last days of summer are gone.

S’mores: While graham crackers, chocolate squares, and marshmallows might not sound like a recipe for health, you just might be surprised at how light this girl-scout favorite can be. By using two graham cracker squares (preferably ones made with whole grain), a couple marshmallows (they’re almost always fat free!), and just two small squares of dark chocolate this sweet summertime treat receives a good-for-you makeover.

Trail mix: Long considered a camping essential, trail mix has received a bad reputation for being a high calorie snack. However, if you make your own trail mix it’s easy to keep this hiking treat healthy. Raisins, almonds, pretzels, whole grain crackers, Cheerios, and dark chocolate chips are all nutritious options.

Hot dogs: What evening spent under the stars is complete without hot dogs cooked over an open fire? There are a few simple tips that can take hot dogs from artery clogging to heart healthy. Opt for turkey or chicken hot dogs over beef hot dogs and you’ll cut the calories and fat in half. In addition, choosing condiments such as mustard, all natural ketchup, veggie chili, and even low calorie Laughing Cow Cheese are all toppings that won’t leave you regretting that late night hot dog roast.

While fall quickly approaches, don’t forget that these last days of summer hold plenty of opportunities to enjoy this season before it slips away for another year. Remember these healthy tips and plan an evening under the stars with your own family. Now pass that bag of marshmallows, please!
