Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. James 4:8-10 Nine-Eleven (9/11) will stand as one of the most tragic moments in world history. Today, we sat glued to television and computer screens, or to the office radio, while demonic forces destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City; significantly damaged the Pentagon; and attempted to terrorize the White House. We stood ashen-faced as we heard of the thousands suspected dead. Christians were praying, most were crying. Some cursing the [...]
Rejoicings in Hope - Are You Thirsty?
I was cleaning up around the kitchen sink last night and on the window sill I have a small bowl which is a catch-all for stray bottle caps, etc. It needed cleaning out - two caps in the trash and at the bottom of the bowl was a black soda cap with the question, “Are you thirsty?” My first thought was, “Man, would that preach!” Since I’m a writer, not a preacher, I offer my sermon in written word! ARE YOU THIRSTY? Since we are reading this in the summer, a record-breaking HOT summer at that, I’d venture to say we’ve all consumed a lot of beverages the past few weeks. Hopefully, we’ve been wise in our choices and water [...]
Rejoicings in Hope - Rest
Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 Here’s how blog topics are birthed in me: I read a scripture, such as the one just quoted, and a word will strongly speak to me. In this case, rest. Then, it seems, this “word” appears everywhere I turn. After perhaps seeing the subject ten or so times, it becomes A Word for me! Rest, not sleep, has been difficult for me to learn. Sitting still [...]
Rejoicings in Hope - what if?
When God gloriously grabbed me and gently got me off the fence of mediocrity, I was given a copy of Oswald Chamber’s My Utmost for His Highest. I was familiar with the devotional because my mom has read it for years and years. Mr. Chambers was quite a remarkable man. He started out an artist, fought God with every stroke of his brush and then one day he fought no longer and became a slave to Christ. He taught aspiring preachers in his London Bible College and ended up in Egypt with his wife and daughter, where he served as a chaplain to the soldiers during WWI, and, where he died of a sudden illness at the young age of [...]
Rejoicings in Hope - to blog or not to blog
Blah - Blah - Blah! Blog - Blog - Blog! I wonder if that’s how the word got started. Blogging, an Internet phenomena, is quite fascinating. Isn’t it astounding that so many people have so much to say. There are blogs about everything under the sun and even about the sun itself! Are you a foodie? a fashionista? a nutritionista? a politico? There are blogs just for you by people just like you! Stay-at-home-mom’s are big on blogging. I was an SAHM for many years during the 60′s and 70′s and I blogged often, but it was called letter writing back then. My grandma loved my letters and told me I had a gift for writing. Tell that to someone [...]
Rejoicings in Hope - The Cross
Have you been there? This blog isn’t about starting your own business; or eating properly; or getting enough exercise; or being the “best you” that you can be. It is about one simple question, “Have you been to the cross?” April is an amazing month. Two of my three children were born in April and several close relatives. The world celebrates Earth Day this month (The earth is the Lord’s; and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein. For He has found it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters Psalm 24:1-2). And, most April calendars include Good Friday and Easter, or more appropriate, Resurrection Day! Good Friday is, for me, a day of serious [...]
Rejoicings in Hope - The K.I.T.E. Principle
March is my least favorite month! There, I said it out loud for all the world to hear! I lived much of my life on the east coast of south Florida and every March the sugarcane fields in Belle Glade would get burned. The hot March wind from the southwest would carry the smelly, choking smoke through coastal towns. Although it is hard to believe, given today’s climate controlled homes, then we didn’t have AC and those smoky winds meant awful sinus headaches for me and little ash particles over the surfaces in my very clean house. UGH! In the Bible, wind commonly symbolizes Holy Spirit (see Acts 2 in the New Testament) and that is a very good thing. [...]
