The Fashionista Diaries: Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim

Music, Culture and Fashion! During July 14th-18th the fashion industry was in full attendance in Miami for the popular Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim. The festivities commenced with an official kickoff party at the luxurious Raleigh Hotel where fashion met fun poolside. As I walked the blue carpet wearing a black sequined dress with my Fashion and Beauty Assistant Sandra Bailey, we noticed popular actress Jessica Szohr of the hit show Gossip Girl. Jessica was the official DJ for the evening spinning a mix of songs that energized the crowd. Various members of the press mingled with socialites while beautiful models served chilled beverages under exotically lit palm trees. The scene was fabulous and the energy was invigorating as everyone celebrated the days ahead.

Friday: Around noon we arrived at the fun and fabulous Lifestyle Retreat Lounge. I decided on a long blue and red halter sundress with embellished crystal sandals for the occasion. As we maneuvered through excited fashionistas, we were confronted with rows of decadent deserts, h’orderves, and complimentary gifts for the guests. Just as a diamond sparkles in the sun, my eyes were immediately drawn to dazzling jewelry on a table. A diversity of beautiful bracelets and necklaces displayed exotically colored stones which were hand made by jewelry designer Taryn Aronson of Jewels by Dunn. Taryn was witty and passionate as she explained her inspiration behind several of her pieces and the origin of the designs. After consuming the eye candy and engaging in a bit of photo booth fun, I was provided the opportunity to meet celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff. As I sat down in her beauty chair I felt like one of her notorious celebrity clients as camera crews captured her charismatically applying a mixture of two concealer colors under my eyes. She began to educate me on the importance of having the correct shade (to avoid raccoon eyes in photos) while discussing the products she used on her celebrity clients Jennifer Lopez, Marissa Tomei, and Alicia Keys. After being reminded of my time constraint by Sandra, I changed into a knee length leopard print dress from Cache with gold stiletto heels before darting to the Poko Pano Swimwear show by Paolo Robba. As I sipped on sweet coconut water I allowed my feet to relax into the sand inside the Oasis tent. At that moment the sounds of salsa music beat through large speakers that vibrated our seats and evoked the desire to dance. Tall tan models with defined bodies stepped onto the runway debuting the designer’s personal vision for swimwear, which consisted of elaborate floral designs and eccentric bold colors. Seconds after the show ended we dashed across a packed court yard that was reminiscent of an upscale beach party to Cabana Grande (the main tent) for The Beach Bunny Swimwear debut. As I arrived in the tent I immediately noticed the dim blue lighting and large crystal chandeliers that hung directly over the runway, which contributed to the overall ambiance of the evening. As the show started, rapid bursts of light escaped the photographers cameras in an attempt to capture the essence of the moment. The show featured glamorous “bridal swimwear” that incorporated intricate detailing on various swimsuits worn by voluptuous models. As I departed the venue I found myself desiring more despite the length of my busy day. As we entered into the last show of the evening we took in a colorful, youthful and fun collection by Crystal Jin. As I departed the venue in pursuit of a pillow, I began to observe the fashion industry professionals that had excitement oozing through their pores. The air buzzed with feedback about the events of the day and what should be expected for the duration of the weekend. Before I closed my eyes that evening, I thought of the quote by the famous Coco Chanel “I don’t do fashion, I am fashion.” It flowed through my veins and pumped excitement to my heart. I eagerly anticipated the rising of the sun for another opportunity to witness fashion at its finest.

Vengeance, His Way

“Don’t let anything happen to my children,” I pleaded to God anytime I heard about a child suffering any injury or tragedy. I was willing to endure anything myself. But not my three little boys. I wished to guard them from any harm, at all cost. God had different plans. Instead, He wished to test my faithfulness to Him. But His way was one I never would have chosen.

When our son Joe turned 17, he attended a Fellowship for Christian Athletes camp. During one of the sessions where the plan of salvation was presented, Joe made his decision and received Jesus as his Savior. Two years later, that decision opened the door to heaven. A month before his 20th birthday, he and another driver pulled onto a 7-11 parking lot after an exchange while driving. They both exited their cars, but Joe didn’t know the man was armed with a knife. The doctors tried to save him, but the 23 stab wounds took his life.

In the midst of my agony, I sought God. And desperate, I clung to the promises that He would comfort me, bring peace back and hold me up when my spirit collapsed. He was true to His promise. And one year later, my family was in the same city, same court building, and same courthouse as the Casey Anthony case. We attended the prosecution of the man responsible for taking my Joe’s life.

My family, my husband, and I stood while we listened to the verdict being read at the end of the trial. We held our breath and sighed with expectation—finally justice would be served. While the courtroom went silent, the verdict was read: not guilty on all counts. The verdict seared. The disbelief devastated us. The injustice nearly destroyed us.

Outrage is understandable. And the shock at the verdict for our son’s case as in the case of Casey Anthony, surges because in the deepest crevice of our soul, we long for justice. Where it comes from doesn’t really matter. But as humans, we long for justice, hoping in some odd way, it would lessen the pain, bring closure, or usher a hint of satisfaction in the midst of heartache.

The truth is that justice does none of that. Not when the tragic action has already turned our world upside down. I’ve written in my books and in dozens of articles about the freedom we all long for: the freedom from pain, from grief, and from loss. But that freedom only comes in the vehicle of forgiveness. Most don’t find it because the outrage blocks what God wants, what He instructs, and what He expects.

Forgive the person who killed that precious little girl? Forgive the man who took our son’s life? Not humanly possible. Forgiveness of such crimes goes against our very logic and instinct. Jury members can condemn, judges can sentence, but only God brings just punishment.

As I write in my book, Simply Salsa: “Justice may be blind. But through God’s grace, injustice helps us see the beauty of forgiveness.” God guarded my heart and tested my faithfulness to His Word. After much reflection and prayer, my husband and I chose to forgive the man who killed our son. And when we did, we were set free from the bars of anger and resentment.

We found that seeking justice, fairness, and vengeance steals our joy. But peace comes when we look up and see God’s verdict read in the courtroom of humanity: “For the LORD has a day of vengeance…a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause.” (Isaiah 34:8) Peace does come when we accept that God puts in place the piece of His divine justice.

Author Janet Perez Eckles writes about the path to triumph over pain, to defeat fear, and the joy to replace sorrow in her new book, Simply Salsa, Dancing Without Fear at God’s Fiesta, to be released in August 2011. For more details visit http://www.janetperezeckles.com/

Packing Up Summer: Making room for autumn

As we approach the last quarter of the year, it may be easy to get dragged down by the things we do anticipating the autumn season. For example, we fight the crowds to check off items from an endless list of school supplies, we shop around for the latest autumn threads, and we assess the financial damage of our extravagant summer vacations. Clearly, the average woman today is always on the run, taking care of one thing to the next. But unfortunately for some, this means allowing the clutter of past seasons to run rampage in their homes. However, we can all get a head start on the fall season by getting on board with these effective packing and storage tips.

For starters, plan ahead. Save yourself storage space by ditching the infamous and worn $2-5 flip-flops, which are good for only one season. Packing up summer can be a great opportunity to give back to the community by donating items that you have worn very little or do not think you will have use for again. Whatever is left over you can go ahead and store.

You will need to store clothing carefully to avoid damage from insects, mold and mildew. Because odors and dampness attract them, wash and dry all clothing thoroughly before putting them away. Do not store them in intense temperatures, as this might cause damage. Fabrics made of natural fibers such as cotton, linen, silk, and wool will need to be stored in well ventilated areas. Instead of plastic bags or airtight containers, opt for rattan trunks or baskets as they allow proper air circulation. You can also add silica gel packets to storage bins to control moisture. If using mothballs, place them in an old sock so they don’t touch the garments.

Toy storage has become a huge organizational challenge for moms everywhere. In order to prevent your children’s toys from taking over your home, you will need to create a system that works. Lengthy summer toys such as bats, hockey sticks and super soakers can be a pain to store. Instead of letting them lay around the house all year unused, try tossing them in tall garbage cans, being sure to label the cans so they are not mistaken for trash.
The summer also brings all sorts of opportunities to gather with friends and family. During this time, we are inspired to pull out picnic table linens and other miscellaneous items. But there must be a time where it all goes back in the box. Outdoor fabric cushions and umbrellas should be completely dry before packing or wrapped in weatherproof covers so they are not spoiled by mildew. For easy access, always keep the frequently used items near the front or top of your storage unit. And for anything that requires assembly, pack it into the box in the order you would put it together. This way next year when you open the container you’ll save time rebuilding it.

All homes have potential storage spaces that go unnoticed, but you can regain this additional storage and free up other parts of your home for fall items. You can do so by investing in double-duty furniture. This practical style allows for multiple functions. For example, ottomans often have additional compartments for storage that are hidden. Also, beds are being designed with additional drawers underneath. You can even purchase under-the-bed storage (with or without wheels) for storing items like clothes, gift wrap, or board games.
Finding time for organizing, packing and storing your seasonal items is essential. Not only will it save you time, but it can also prevent the inconvenience of injury that could result from excess clutter. It may seem like a demanding task but it can be done efficiently. It can be as easy as storing gently used clothing inside of luggage instead of storing them empty. If you can find yourself following at least three of these tips during these last summer days, next year you can spend less time finding things and more time soaking up the sun.

Ruby Gettinger, Overcoming obstacles and creating a new life

Have you ever found that your greatest weakness became your greatest strength? This became true for a woman we love, star of Style Network’s highest rated show, “Ruby,” Ruby Gettinger. Three years ago she set out to take America with her on a journey to overcome morbid obesity. The result became not only losing over 400 lbs. but inspiring countless people all over the world to take control over something they felt made them powerless.

“If it imprisons you, it matters because if something is causing you not to live your life, come out of your house, do things you can only dream about, or watch others do in movies, then you are in prison,” says Ruby.

It is never easy to face an imprisoning challenge, but Ruby has been generous and courageous enough to face such a private struggle in a very public way. The experience has been fruitful and life-changing for her and for everyone who gives a chance to the woman who makes weight-loss stylish.

HOPE: Who are you and what matters to you?
RG: What a great question! I really can’t give you one answer because I have so many people, places, things that have traveled with me through life. Through all this, I find I am still searching to find the missing pieces of the puzzle that will complete me. I believe in God, Jesus, family and friends, and my pups, I LOVE them with all that I am! I love spending time with them. I love to laugh and could do it 24/7. I think this is a great and bad quality of mine, but I truly believe in the impossible: I believe in mankind! My passion is God and people! And for me, and everyone, to live their God-given destiny! To laugh out loud and live a little, not care so much about who is looking or talking. Love your life!

HOPE: You are major inspiration to so many people. Your show is #1 on Style Network. You signed on to do your show in 2008. Since you signed on, what has changed about the purpose of the show, what you sought to accomplish, and your relationship to your weight?
RG: …my journey was about finding out the truth behind me being morbidly obese and getting healthy at the same time. The biggest accomplishment for me was when I started to change mentally, emotionally, spiritually not only physically. The biggest eye opener for me was, not after I lost over 400 pounds, but when I gained 60 pounds back and was truly blinded to myself. To find out we are truly in a fight for our lives and the only thing that can save us wasn’t a diet [or] exercise (even though they are great tools and essential) but only after we fix the mental/emotion/spiritual problem.

HOPE: Usually fitness products are endorsed by a seemingly fit spokesperson. However, people across the nation relate to you and trust you with their weight issues. (Why) do you feel that it is more important to have a person actually in need of the fitness journey rather than someone who can speak from having already done the journey?
RG: Because they are doing this with me and they are discovering with me! The great part about this journey is that we have each other. Everything I find out for the first time, they find out. Everything I do for the first time, they can do. We are all on the same journey!

Because of Ruby’s candidness, many have begun to trust her struggle with weight as her credibility for weight loss. With that, she offers her opinions on the process and what to consider for those who are waiting to begin their journey.

HOPE: What is more important, eating healthy or exercising?
RG: My personal opinion [is that] the most important is getting to the root of the problem which is fixing your mental/emotional/spiritual and the other important things will happen. If you find a trainer always make sure they know what they are doing and [that] it’s their passion. Drew and Shazi have been amazing to me because it is their passion!

HOPE: What is your favorite food and has that changed since you started living healthier?
RG: Sweets for days! It has changed! I find when I crave sweets, if I get an Atkins bar, it saves me. That is during PMS! I give you my word, when I did OurLife for 3 to 6 months it changed my palate! It took 3 months for it to happen, but thank God it did. I learned to love fish [and] veggies…

Ruby keeps in contact with her fans via her blog on Style Network Online. One of her most powerful messages stemmed from an entry she called, “If it imprisons you, it matters.”

HOPE: Why is this message important to those trying to lose weight?
RG: For me and others who have been caged by our addiction, and some home bound, they refuse to leave their homes because society doesn’t accept them! I am shouting out loud to them first: GO LIVE YOUR LIFE! YOU ARE ALLOWED TO COME OUT INTO THE WORLD! GO TO THE MOVIES, GO HEAR A CONCERT, GO AND SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS! I know people will stare, but it will last five to ten minutes. Let them know you have every right to be where ever you want. Please start being free and as you take your first step out that door, your healing will begin! Fear keeps us frozen in time! The more we wait we gain, the more we avoid the problem and the longer we take to get help, the bigger the beast becomes and your prison becomes smaller! You are worth it!

HOPE: What is your source of faith and how has it affected your journey through life?
RG: My faith is God, Jesus, Bible and no matter where I am or how many times I do not get it right and fail, I will always have my faith to remind me I am worth it all and just because I am not perfect, I am still loved and have a purpose! In God’s eyes no one is better than the other. It’s a safety net you can’t put into words, you must trust it and feel it for yourself.

HOPE: Now having been on this journey for years, what is something you wish you had known before you started?
RG: Not to be so trusting of people that say they have your same passion.

Ruby’s followers can rest assured that she has the same passion for weight loss and healthy living as they do. More than the useful products or exciting new exercise plans, she wants her fans to know this, “To live your life right now! Start this very second and do not wait until tomorrow to dream or beat what you need to in your life! Tomorrow will not come for another 10 years or more and sometimes NEVER! It’s time to be free from the chains! It is never too late to live your God given destiny! I believe in you!”

HOPE: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see read these words?

Change: Freedom
Food: Healthy
Home: My Photos
Happiness: Foxy, Lucy, Mellie, Rinny, Angel, Jim, Georgia, Jeff, Ben, Zach, Kayro, Mom, John, Leslie, Greg, McGinty kids, Denny, Kristie, 6th street, family and fins! Hearing from everyone on my blogs or meeting them different places…
Strength: six sense
Purpose: to help others
Success: Loving others

HOPE: What do you HOPE for the most?
RG: To bring a true face to obesity, to get to the higher ups- the President and First Lady, Senate etc. - so we can start fixing the problem. I want to help me and everyone else be free!

Whether or not Ruby has been a part of your journey, regardless if obesity is one of your personal struggles, her mission and message is universal: Live your life now and don’t be imprisoned by your fears. Ruby has become not only a motivational leader, but a spokeswoman for Life. And for that, she is a Woman We Love.
