These scones feature the subtle flavor of real maple syrup, both in the scones themselves, and in their glaze. They’re simple, delicious, and the ultimate cozy Saturday morning treat to enjoy with a mug of hot coffee.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Total time: 30 minutes

Yield: 8 servings

INGREDIENTS

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 pound (1 stick) chilled butter

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1/3 cup maple syrup

1 large egg

2 tablespoons milk, or as needed

For Glaze:

1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

pinch of salt

2 tablespoons maple syrup, Grade B preferred

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  2. In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk to combine.

  3. Cut butter into 1 tablespoon slices. Using a pastry blender, cut butter into flour mixture
until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Add nuts, if using.

  4. Stir in maple syrup and egg. Add milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until dough is moistened
    but not too sticky.

  5. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface, and roll in the flour to coat. Knead lightly
    for 1 minute.

  6. Transfer dough to a piece of parchment paper or a silicone mat. Press into an 8-inch disk. Cut into 8 wedges but don’t separate.

  7. Place parchment on a baking sheet, and bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Immediately remove from baking sheet and carefully separate.

  8. In a small bowl, mix together glaze ingredients. Drizzle over scones, and serve warm.
