Stand By Me

“When the night has come

And the land is dark

And the moon is the only light we'll see

No I won't be afraid

Oh, I won't be afraid

Just as long as you stand, stand by me”

These lyrics to Ben E. King’s classic hit roared within the walls of St. George’s Chapel on May 19, 2018 and reached the hearts of the 29.19 million viewers who watched from their homes as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle publicly committed their hearts to one another. What was to many viewers just another song on the interminable list of Royal Wedding preliminaries, it is now very likely that these words truly echo the heart’s tale of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Months shy of their third wedding Anniversary, the world watched again as this couple sat down with Oprah to provide insight on their separation from the Royal Family. This revealing interview left many of us with jaw-dropping responses to the concealed experiences of the couple since their blissful wedding day.

With each passing minute of the interview, Meghan grew even more vulnerable than the moment before. She exposed the lack of preparation that was provided while transitioning into a role of such distinct magnitude; at one point even having to google the words to their National Anthem.

The couple’s confessions stretched from heart-wrenching to joy. Learning of their expected new baby girl gave many of the viewers sweet sighs of joy. While other confessions such as colorist concerns for Baby Archie and Meghan’s suicidal thoughts while serving as a Senior Royal left even the iconic Oprah Winfrey with a jaw-dropping response.

“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”
Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex

It would be this confession to her husband that would awaken the lyrics to the song beautifully performed by the Kingdom Choir on the day they were wed.

“Just as long as you stand, stand by me.”

With no further use of their royal titles and a new life in Los Angeles, this couple is walking in their own version of a fairy tale. One that stands by each other, when the night has come.
