Movies and Series We Can’t Wait to See in 2023
The Color Purple
It’s the top of the year and some highly anticipated films and series coming out (or returning). Last year, production companies were trying to gain momentum and profits again with theatrical releases like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Top Gun Maverick. This year, there are some blockbuster films approaching the start line and there is something for everyone, kids included. Going to the movies is one of the best ways to have fun with others or enjoy some alone time. Add snacks and drinks and enjoy! Here’s a quick list:

Creed III (3/3/2023)
Adonis Creed is back in the ring and the extra exciting component is the film is directed by Michael B. Jordan and produced by Ryan Coogler and Sylvester Stallone.
Fast X (5/19/23)
Good action films often bring an adrenaline rush and this film is anticipated to do just that. The Fast and Furious franchise has been speeding across theater screens since 2001 and they are not slowing down.
The Little Mermaid (5/26/23)
A lot of buzz was generated when the trailer was released for this live action version of The Little Mermaid as children of color watched Halle Bailey appear on the screen as the title character. With Lin-Manuel Miranda signed on as a producer as well as a writer of four new songs with another famed music composer, Alan Menken, this movie might be another feather in Disney’s cap.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse (6/2/23)
The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse is awaiting the audience’s arrival in the spider verse as Miles (Spider-Man) and Gwen (Spider-Woman) tackle a new villain along with other the spider people from across the spider verse. Some of these spider people may sound familiar as they are voiced by Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Brian Tyree Henry. This film is sure to be fun for kids and kids at heart.
The Color Purple (12/20/23)
Oprah Winfrey is upping the ante with this new musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s classic novel The Color Purple with an all-star cast from the stage and the screen: Fantasia, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Aunjanue Ellis, David Alan Grier, and Tamela Mann to name a few. This film is set to become a classic, as its predecessor, while introducing an entirely new audience to Miss Celie and a host of other characters that forged a place in fiction literature and our hearts. Bel-Air
When the topic of reboots comes up most times people are not inclined to vote yea, especially when it comes to iconic television shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but this show is absolute must-see. In the second season, Will makes the decisions that he alone wants to make while the Banks family works through their own volitions and the audience is along for the ride. Buckle up for the season premiere February 23, 2023 streaming on Peacock.
Never Have I Ever, Season 4
From the genius minds of Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher is this romantic-comedy-drama series on Netflix. On the surface, this show is about an Indian-American teen and the ups and downs of high school, but beneath that the story is so relatable and witty. If you are looking for a binge-able show, add this to your watchlist so it is queued up for your next Netflix day. Season four drops on Netflix this year.
Abbott Elementary
School is back in session at Abbott Elementary school and Ms. Teagues and the rest of the teachers and staff have returned with hilarious stories and insightful lessons. This show is a gem not only for the comedic relief it brings, but it is also a show you can watch with your family on Wednesday nights on ABC and streaming on HULU.
The Walking Dead spin-offs
This series is loved by its legions of fans, and as the series closed, people have been excited about some of the characters’ story continuing. Rick and Michonne played by actors Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira are executive producing the new spin-off and have helped continue developing their characters stories. According to The Walking Dead Universe, Danai said, “Michonne and this TWD family has meant so much to me, and to continue the journey of these beloved characters, alongside Scott and Andy, both creatively and in front of the camera, and bringing The Walking Dead fans something truly special is just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.” Tales of the Walking Dead premires August 14, 2023. Another spin-off from TWDU, The Walking Dead: Dead City.
