“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.” Ecclesiastes 9:10
It is the end of March and spring is here. It is time for spring cleaning, including ourselves! This year I am suggesting that we take a moment to reflect on what we have achieved thus far in 2011. Many of us took the time to develop goals for 2011 and refined our visions. What have you achieved thus far? What is standing in the way of you accomplishing your goals and walking into your destiny? We may need to do some internal spring cleaning to help produce more fruit in our external lives. I took some time to reflect on what I feel God has asked me to do. I encourage you to do the same. You may need to remove some people, some activities, relationships, or other things from your life that are keeping you from reaching your goals. If you look deep inside yourself and seek God, He will reveal what you need to do. The most dangerous thing that will keep you from reaching your destiny after this revelation is procrastination.
Webster’s Dictionary defines procrastination as “to defer action; delay: to procrastinate until an opportunity is lost.” How many of us will think about that when we put off to tomorrow what can (and should) be done today? You may be familiar with the phrase “When we take one step, God will take two.” Often when we pray and ask the Lord for the desires of our hearts, He will expect us to play a role in making it happen. I am going to give you Biblical illustration of why God does not want His children to procrastinate, especially in the things that He has called for us to do.
Let’s visit the Parable of the Great Feast (Luke 14:15-24). Jesus invited many guests to come and eat with Him. One by one, they each had an excuse of why they could not come. They missed out on the one opportunity to eat with Jesus. What would you have given to eat with your Lord and Savior? Would you have put that off until tomorrow or would you have shifted your priorities?
I was reading a book and a Bible scholar identified the word “tomorrow” as one of the most dangerous words. This was powerful to me. I began to think about tomorrow as a thief in that if you allow it, it can rob you of your dreams and goals in life and keep you from your greatest achievements.
Consequences of Procrastination:
1. It delays your blessings from God.
2. It keeps you from living the perfect will of God.
3. It robs us of opportunities to serve the Lord and do His work.
4. It robs us of our greatest achievements.
5. It can hinder you from being a blessing to others.
One of the devil’s most effective tools is to trick us into putting off things until later. Don’t fall into the trap. Go after your goals and dreams now, for tomorrow is not promised! If you are waiting for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done! (Ecclesiastes 11:4). Have you been procrastinating? Realize that you do not have forever to fulfill your purpose. Moses, who was once a procrastinator, wrote, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Proverbs 90:12).
Is it time to do some spring cleaning in your life? What (or maybe who) do you need to eliminate from your life that is a road block to your destiny? What is hindering you? Dust yourself off, look through the window of your heart and clean yourself up so that you can shine while riding into your destiny. Check your vision and what you need to do to achieve it and then…Just get it done!
Sending hope your way!
