~The Movie Alternative

If you’re anything like me and millions of other Americans, at some point this summer, you shelled out a small fortune (seriously…tickets are upwards of $12, right?) to enjoy a summer blockbuster movie. Maybe you shared Jaden Smith’s journey along with Jackie Chan in Karate Kid, sat on the edge of your seat watching Angelina Jolie star in Salt, enjoyed Just Wright with Common & Queen Latifah or LOLed at animated hit Despicable Me. Whatever your preference, movies were more than likely a part of your summer regimen. Perhaps you visited Netflix or Blockbuster Online and made it a movie night at the house. Either way, you’ve enjoyed a movie or two this summer.
Not to take anything away from what you’ve seen, you should know there are alternatives.
Christian movies have become more and more common and happen to feature some of your favorite actors and actresses, and maybe a few of your favorite Christian artists. Did you happen to hear about the movie Blessed & Cursed featuring Deitrick & Damita Haddon, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Karen Clark-Sheard? This recently released movie tells the story of a young man named Dwight (portrayed by Deitrick Haddon) raised in the church who is searching for his purpose in life. In the film, Dwight is offered the position of Minister of Music for a well known congregation and finds himself caught up in a web of drama and betrayal.
Perhaps you’ve heard something about Standing Firm. The film features Rob Reisman, Eric Stevenson, Joan Golda, Katie Whitton & Aaron Slack. Dave, the main character portrayed by Rob Reisman, is a recent widower with a mind and heart full of questions, anger & pain. Dave blames God for taking his wife and eventually turns his back on the church. However, in an effort to have his whys answered, Dave is led right back to God. The DVD is set to be released August 24th.
Feel GREAT movie, Letters to God, is a story of an 8 year named Tyler battling terminal illness who regularly writes letters to God. Tyler’s letters are found by Brady, a postal worker who is at life’s crossroads and trying to find his way. Tyler’s faith and that undeniable pull lead Brady to the path he should be on, right toward God. The movie features Robyn Lively, Jeffrey Johnson, Maree Cheatham & Tanner Maguire. The movie is set to be released August 10th to DVD.
If you’re looking for movies to help increase your faith and hope or to watch with your family & simply enjoy, I’d definitely suggest these films for the next movie night.

I’ve needed someone to come along and give me a few good movie alternatives! This is so helpful and so very important, I think! Thank you so much, Kezia!
Glad you enjoyed Victoria!
Omgosh!!! A movie post! LOVE IT! To my Friday repertoire, I am adding a drive-by to your Entertainment posts!!
Thank you much! :0)
Love the alternatives Kezia, thanks!
Wow, about $12 now for movie tickets? I’ve not paid full price for tickets in I can’t remember when. lol
With that thought in mind, does anyone have their free Kerasotes $5 Buck Club card? After the alternatives when you want to temporarily revert back to the “other” movies (like we all do ladies) at the show you can buy tickets for a flat $5 per show at various Kerosotes theaters.
If you don’t mind waiting a certain number of weeks (usually 2) after the show hits the theaters, you’ll enjoy the ticket savings. You can even get a card for your whole fam. We love it!
Hope I’ve not babbled on too much here. Sorry if I have. Just trying to help save a little money whenever I can. lol
At any rate, more details about the $5 Buck Club can be found here:

AWESOME REVIEWS! Movie tickets are very expensive and you have to pray that it isn’t showing in 3-D because they tack on a few extra dollars for the glasses. By the time you get through paying it’s hard to enjoy the movie! LOL! Let’s not forget the snacks!
Kezie…meant to say I think you just created the Hope version of Ebert and Roeper …(smile) Can’t wait to see more post!!!!
Callie..thanks so much! Also thanks for the info!
Angie..thank you much for your words! Ebert and Roper though?? Whooa!
Kezia - Great info here. We usually wait for something to come out in dvd or go to “second run” theaters and pay a lesser ticket fee. I took my grandson to see Karate Kid on “wild Wednesday” and paid $10 for: 2 tickets; 1 small soda; 2 bags of popcorn; 1 bag of M&M’s. Now, there’s a real bargain! Moms & Grandma’s need to know where the discounts are being offered!
Love the suggestions - having a list of movies that will encourage me in my faith is something I really appreciate.
Thanks!
Susan, thanks so much! Totally agree with you!
Angela, I’m glad I could provide some insight. Thanks much!
Awesome post, Kezia!! Thanks so much for those movie recommendations. My husband and I are the teen leaders at our church and we always look for great Christian films to show them! Will be checking these out!
Blessings,
