We Must Have Compelling Homes!

Recently I read the book Shepherding a Child’s Heart. I’ve been thinking much about Biblical Parenting lately. In my seminary wives class and in the book was the idea that we, as Christians, need compelling homes.

I have long thought that the home is one of the most powerful tools for evangelism that we have; especially in a world where marriages and families are falling apart everywhere you look, and homes are places where people do not want to be.

As Christians, when we work hard at keeping our marriage and family together, and full of joy, and keeping our homes places that bring rest, comfort, and peace, we are doing something opposite of what our culture is doing.

Then, our children want to be home, our husbands want to be home! When people come into our home, they will notice a difference, it will be compelling! It will cause them to ask questions. It will cause them to wonder!

What an opportunity to share the gospel!!!

Mrs. Stinson shared in my class the following:

“We do not have compelling homes. And, we have the gospel. That’s a problem!”

And here is a quote from Shepherding a Child’s Heart (pg. 196):

“We must work to make home an attractive place to be.”

What a task we have been given. Please do not be overwhelmed by this task. Please be encouraged, you don’t do this alone. You have the power and strength of God on your side!

Here are five practical tips to have a compelling home:

  1. Make Christ the center of your home. His presence in your home will make a dramatic difference!
  2. Make your home a place of prayer. Voice your concerns to God. He hears you!
  3. Be happy. So many times we paint a picture of unhappiness. Don’t be afraid to smile and laugh!
  4. Show your love for your husband, for your children.
  5. Eat meals together at the table. This provides a great opportunity to talk and get to know each other better!

I hope that you understand the importance for us to have compelling homes! Each home will look different because each family is different. Embrace your family and your needs and create a home that is compelling!

Thank you for the affirmation. I have always believed home should be the place to can't wait to get to. Where you can be free and breathe easy, which is a testamemt to the Glory of God in your lives.
